The color red is a very powerful color. It’s important to understand its impacts when using red in decorating, art and design.

The color red has a special effect on the human brain so that it is noticed before other colors and given a stronger weight.

The color red grabs your attention. It’s used in traffic lights, fire engines, and stop signs. When we see this color in our environment we immediately think STOP! ALERT! PAY ATTENTION! When you use this color in decorating, it’s going to make someone stop, look and pay attention. Use the color red in dramatic spurts in design and decorating… so that the color draws your eye to what you want to focus on. If you use too much red, the color will be too overpowering.

Remember, that red is known to many as a danger warning… and therefore can have negative impressions.

The color red is also associated with vibrant energy. Again, when using red in design, you create energy and impact. Red is very exciting and can really jazz up a room or web site. But using too much will literally cause your room to vibrate… and that may not be what you intended.

It’s interesting that you see red used in children’s play rooms and toys. Why? Because the color red is full of energy! And so are children!

Red colors symbolize heat and fire. Red is symbolic of passion and power.  Red stirs up passion. The color red is the color of strength, love, respect, beauty and courage.

The color red means celebration or a very special event. We associate red with gifts, Christmas, Valentines Day, hearts and bows.

Red is a very exciting color and one of my personal favorites. I use it in all my decorating. It may be a maroon wall…  a white vase of red flowers… red in the fabric of my curtains. It brings energy to the room… and makes me smile. After all, the most important meaning of a color is how you yourself perceive it.
