What are the primary colors?

primary color wheelThe primary colors consist of three hues - red, yellow and blue.

The term hue means the specific color you see. It is the wave-length of the light.

These colors are called primary because you can make ANY other hue or color by mixing two of these hues together.

When you mix two hues, you vary the wave-length of the light that they produce… and produce a new hue.

Mixing Colors

When you mix equal amounts of red and yellow together you get the color orange.

When you mix equal amounts of yellow and blue together you get green.

And when you mix equal amounts of blue and red together you get violet.

These three new colors… orange, green and violet are known as secondary colors… which are produced by mixing the primary colors red, yellow and blue.
