Understanding the secondary colors on a basic color wheel

color wheel secondary colorsThe basic color wheel above illustrates how the primary colors and secondary colors relate to each other.

The primary colors are red, yellow and blue.

When you mix red and yellow, you get a secondary color orange. Look at the basic color wheel. See how the orange color is in between the red and yellow? That’s because red and yellow make orange.

Green is another secondary color. It is created by mixing the primary colors yellow and blue. Again… see how the green hue is in between the yellow and blue on the color wheel?

And violet is the third secondary color. Can you tell what two primary colors make violet by looking at the color wheel? Yep! Red and Blue.

The secondary colors are orange, green and violet.

The primary and secondary hues together create a basic color wheel.
